some people can't be taught scum will be scum, society dictates that! because you will always have the under privileged, fundamental skills to just intergrate are lost (and that is not a personal attack on the poor because not all lack these morals it's just a fact that the majority do) this leading to the degradation we are witnessing.

I think parenting skills should be taught in school before they leave. It would possibly only make a minimal difference and of course, none to the truants. We have to try something for the sake of the poor unborn children of these badly brought up people.

yes, they can be reached, but there are always going to be families like frank gallghers, in shameless.. but we can only lead the horse to water...
social initiatives work, but apathy and ignorance play abig part in attracting these users to available services... and they book in for a 10 week course, and dissapear within a few sessions because its too much trouble.
and i live and work in coventry... on a council estate, where we may be working class, but we arent scum...

parents should be held accountable for the actions of their children up to 18 yrs old and hit in the pockets fines could be dished out and the size of them would be determined by how much the parents have or earn
if the parents are on benefit the amount of money they receive should be dropped

It seems to me that the only hope is through reaching out their children when they are vulnerable or impressionable. Intentions must be 100% honorable though.
I live in a poor community. People seem quite stubborn and defensive. It seems they think they know it all or that's the impression I get. It's frustrating. I grew up in an affluent community. I can see why some people are snobby because I have to say that I don't really like living in this community.
My in-laws don't have much money. They just seem to have a very distorted view of the world. It's very different from mine and from what I grew up with. I get aggravated when I see them because they tend to be negative and judgmental.
Their kids (all boys, 6, one is deceased) are all messed up and they think they are blameless. No one is perfect, right?
I don't know. I have tried reasoning with them when I just can't take it anymore. But it doesn't make a difference. They don't listen. I don't think they get it. But maybe they are so used to being negative (thinking that everyone is out to get them) and judging others. My mother in law says that she doesn't do secondhand hellos and yet she told me husband to tell me hello. ???
I'd like to think that there is hope but it's not realistic. But children can be reached and we should be reaching out to them and giving them every opportunity we can. Short-term costs with long-term benefits.

For some people, poverty or just plain tackiness is all they know...who are we to say they are scum? Are you sure they are bad people? Do they deserve less in life than you?

well, i'm in the US, but i know what you're talking about. there are always going to be the people who use the government programs to better their life situations and the people on the opposite end of the spectrum who abuse the system.

Unfortunately its never going to happen. People seem to have forgotten whats important in life and I've a feeling that its only going to get worse. If children are brought up properly and educated (not just the academic but social education) then we could turn it around. But its a vicious circle, crappy parents make crappier kids, who in-turn (about 13 years down the line!) make their own stupid offspring.
