I have done hair for 10 years and with the kids and my soon husband travels that will not be an option. I have worked in an office with limited use on word ,excell ect. I know enought it get by but would love any sudjestions on a career that has a 401K or other careers that could be of a day job I will go back to school if need be but I need job ideas and one that will work with a traveling spouse. What career can be attained with limited training? tell me what you do?
Anyone know how to get free info of cheap classes on office admin w/o going to classes?
Since you actually have office experience already, and limited Word, Excel, etc., you don't necessarily need to go back to school and take lots of classes. It all depends on how good your skills are and your level of expertise with things.
I teach online classes, and get plenty of students who want to update their skills, and so online classes might work for you as well. And there are even "short" training sessions lasting a few hours or a day offered through community colleges that you can take.
My suggestion is to look into community colleges and check out their continuing education classes. Here is where you'll find those short and quick training sessions to update your skills, which will make you more marketable to an employer.

Honey, your lookin for a pretty conveniant job here. You have to either choose less money or get a better education. Admins can make a very decent salay, but most of them have BA's an BS in business administration. You can get this degree online, but there are two downfalls: One it is NOT cheap. It will run around $25,000 at least to acheive an online BA or BS. Two a lot of employers like to see that their potential employees have had a somewhat traditional education. Shortcuts may be quick but it won't get you quite as far. I'd suggest you take night classes and find someone to watch your kids on those days.

A majority of administrative positions are now filled through temporary/employment agencies. If you register with one, they will test your office skills. If you don't do well, they have tutorials you can take to improve your skills, and it won't cost you anything. I did admin work while I was in college, and I had some fantastic permanent job offers.
I don't know how much you make now, but I know the admin at my old company made about $40k and did not have a degree. If you make your way up to executive assistant, you can make significantly more.
