Have an appt. to get dreads,but..........?

I made an appointment to get dreads next week, but now everyone's doubts are causing me to doubt-don'tcha hate that!!Anyways,I have med.thick hair about half-way down my back that has taken me a really, really long time to grow out one length.I love the look of dreads and I love the fact that they are all natural. My family and I try to stay away from any chemical contaminants as much as we possibly can,so dreads seem ideal for me-not to mention that I need my hair to be pretty low maitenance(3 kids, husband, house, small insane plethera of pets). You know,I just like to be sort of earthy and feminine without having to work at it too much.I guess that I really just need some people who've been there to give it to me straight-What can/has gone wrong-pros%26amp;cons,etc.

I believe that dreads can be very damaging to your hair; it's also very difficult to keep your scalp clean with them. I saw a girl on What Not to Wear whose hair was so damaged by them that she had to get her hair cut off super short. I wouldn't do it.

The worst that will happen is that you will look like a White girl pretending to be something she is not.

Dreds require committment. If you're not "all in," find another low-maintenance style.

i've never had them, so i can't really give you any pros or cons, but the bottom line is that it's just hair. if you decide it's not working for you, then you can just cut it. good luck! i'm sure you'll look great :)

don't do it chica if you get dreads and you don't like them you would have to shave your head and let your hair grow out.

They can be really cool but consider..... you have to have them cut out - so they are a major commitment. Plus, my friends who have done it complain that they smell...they really can.

It's not cool to smell.

So....consider cutting your hair short enough to make a pony tail your low maintenance style. It can be very attractive, timeless, no trouble and no commitment.

Dreads can look cute, many people can pull them off and make them look cute and quirky.

If they suit your looks, personality and lifestyle I say go for it.

I bet you'll get a lot of people on here going 'EWWWWWW WASH UR HAIR' but I suppose they don't know about the specificaly designed dreaded hair products? Including shampoo! You should be able to find some around (if the place you're having them done at doesn't do the products, try ebay and also piercing/tattoo accessory sites.)

Good luck, and do whatever you feel like :) It's your body!

Just don't get them sewn too tight, or you will have a headache for a week or two until your hair grows longer. The curlier your hair is the less maintenance your dreads will need. Do it, they sound ideal for you.

Might look weird since you are white (from your avatar at least...)

Also, really hard to keep your hair and scalp clean.

I understand what you're saying. I, too, wear my hair natural. Why not try double-strand twists? They are low-maintenance and you can still wear your hair straight if you want to blow it out.

dont get dreads!!

if you change your mind after you get them, the only way to get them out is to cut all your hair off! yikes!

besides, if you want early and feminine, just leave hair down =) or in cute braids.

an alternative to dreads, equally low maintenance, is corn rows, they cute, earthy, and feminine, and so much better than dreads! =)

Have an appt. to get dreads,but..........?

sorry-dreads are just gross. They make me think of someone who is dirty...my boss had them before I swear they stunk.....she ended up getting rid of them and looked like a different person...she got her head almost shaved-not quite that short but super short..that would be low maintenance.....

Have an appt. to get dreads,but..........?

ummm gross. you know dreads are just clumps of twisted, unwashed hair? and you're white. cut your hair shorter. don't have to be a tree-hugger hippie to be green.

If dreads are something you really want and if having them would simply your life a little more than I say go for it ....... And don't look for people on here to justify them ....The only person I would really care abouts opinion is your husband and if he is okay then do it .... Life is too short.....and if it makes things easier for you then do it and I am sure they will look wonderful !!

Hope this was helpful ~~~~

Good Luck !!!!

go for it!!! ive always wanted them but im scared haha.

i think they are awesome. screw what people say

since my hair is always straightened i get my hair in dreads during the summer to give it a rest so i don't have to deal with it. to look more feminine i leave part of the ends down so its like 3/4 braided 1/4 loose. and all you have to do is put some leave in conditioner spray on your scalp and you'll be good to go.

but i suggest you re-do your dreads every 3-4 weeks or else when you try to take them out your hair falls out or ends up really really rough. then you'll have to use a lot of chemicals.

and dreads really helped my hair to grow long over the summer.
