Please don't go using a chemical treatment on your hair. It's just not worth the risk to the baby.
I suggest you purchase the cheapest hair conditioner plaster it on to dry hair and comb it out with a head lice comb. Once your hair is dry use a ceramic hair straightener to iron your hair. Any unhatched nits (eggs) will be killed by the heat of the straightener. I would repeat this treatment again in 3-5 days. Just to be sure you didn't miss any the first time.
A female louse will lay between three to eight eggs (nits) per day in the hair, within 1.5cm of the scalp. These eggs resemble dandruff but cannot be brushed off. Head lice do not have wings or jumping legs so they cannot fly or jump from head to head. They can only crawl.
Head lice mainly spread through close head-to-head touching.
They may be spread through sharing brushes and hats.
They are not likely to be spread through bedding, furniture or carpets, as they cannot live and lay eggs away from a warm human scalp.
However, wash your pillowcase and cushions, or put them in a plastic bag and into the sunlight for a few hours, just in case! Sunlight will fry the lice.

they can live up to 72 hours OR LONGER. yes they multiply VERY quickly. put all sheets toys and everything else in a bag make sure you wash them put them all in trash bags for a few days spray them with a delouser you can get from a pharmacy or local walmart. Also buy some delicing kits . went through this a lot as a child. Make sure you call the childrens parents and let them know, even if they werent the ones who gave them to you they still need to know. just wash all farbics and stuffed toys and any woven fabrics ASAP.

www.headlice.org. I am not sure how safe it is but tea tree oil is a natural alternative to getting rid of headlice, as is treating it with mayo. That website says otherwise but they are probably funded by the companies who make the over the counter headlice treatments and want to rake in more money. For the mayo treatment, you cover your entire scalp with mayo. Wrap a plastic bag around your head and use a blow dryer to heat the mayo up for like 5 or 10 minutes. Then leave the bag on your head for a couple of hours. I got a horrible case of headlice as a teen and all of the over the counter shampoo methods didn't work. We finally used the mayo method and it did the trick. My daughter recently got head lice from school and I did the mayo on her first but forgot to use the hair dryer. It killed the live lice on her head but she got reinfested because some eggs hatched due to them not getting fried by the heat.

Ewwwww. I'm so sorry. And soooo glad that my kids don't come home with the little buggers any longer.
They don't live all that long off of a host, about 24 hours. It takes them 7-10 days to mature and lay eggs.
To get rid of them without chemicals you will need two things:
A really good lice removal comb (not those flimsy things you can buy in a drugstore). I like the Lice Meister and have included its homepage in the sources.
And a blow dryer.
Lice cannot survive dry heat. Both the bugs and the nits will die off if they are subjected to dry heat for long enough. So what you do is blow dry your head for a good 15 or 20 minutes, concentrating on the scalp area. This will assassinate any of the little buggers that don't get picked up by the comb.
Use the comb and the blow dryer for about a week once a day and you should be good to go.
Last time I got them my hair was waist length and I'm chemically sensitive. If I hadn't found that comb and the information on the dry head I'd have gotten a crew cut...but the method worked.
Good luck to you, and make those kids' mom treat their little heads.

A few questions about head lice?
When there was an epidemic in my childs school there were information sheets sent home to all parents by the local health authority about lice. It said they can not live when not on the head so can' t live on sheets, combs etc. They crawl from head to head not jump or fly for this reason as well they stay on their host head until another head is in crawling distance.
They take 7 to 10 days to grow to full size which sounds like the one you got from your head and also 7 to 10 days for the eggs to hatch (they are white and stuck to the hair close to the scalp the longer they have been on the head the further from the scalp they are as hair grows they also turn a browny creamy colour when hatched). They are often getting immune to the chemicals anyway and the most successful way to get rid of them is going through your head with a metal fine tooth comb every day for 14 days. Putting conditioner on your hair will stop them moving about so much and will make it easier to comb. It is best to do this over the sink or a piece of white paper so you can see what you have found. Tea tree can prevent them coming back because like many insects they don't like the smell but you should be careful with this in pregnancy and seek advice. If you just use conditioner with tea tree added already then should be safe to use in pregnancy without checking - read labels.
Most people still like to wash all bedding, brushes etc but I don't think it is really necessary but go ahead if it will make you feel better.

WASH everything with HOT water that you have came in contact with, sheets, blankets ect. Use vasaline on your head to smother the lice, cake it on your roots and wrap your hair in plastic for a while and then wash it out shampoo and try to comb all of the lice and eggs out of your hair. To extreme cut your hair as short as you can that might help. Good Luck I fought this with my daughter years ago and it took like 2 months to get rid of everything due to the fact that my ex's girlfriends daughter had it and every 2 weeks she would go over there and come back with more.
Good Luck!
hmmmm... have you tried blow drying your hair? it will dry out all those head lice, then brushing them off with a nit comb
