Yorkshire terrier (kind of yappy though) or Keeshond, I had one and she was awesome lived until she was 15, gentle, obedient and wonderful with my son (like he was her baby) since the time he was born (now 13 1/2). Looks like a small wolf.

Long haired dogs require lots of hair care! Plenty of grooming, good diet and be ready to use the vacuum at a moments notice! I enjoyed my Golden Retriever (big breed) and I find long haired Dotson's (little breed) are adorable. Usually, smaller dogs are not so good with kids. I would imagine it would be similar to being an ant and looking up to find a human foot about to stomp! Very scary and could cause biting! I would go with the Retriever any day of the week around a child. Good Luck

I don't think that i would recommend a toy breed for a family with kids..especially not the tiny breeds, such as yorkies or Chihuahuas...It's way too easy for them to get injured accidentally with children around.. I would go for a medium-sized dog, preferably a mutt. They are the best with children and tend to be healthier in the long run than a purebred dog. Plus you can go right to your local animal shelter and rescue one! Also consider that a long-haired dog is a large amount of work-daily brushing for one! You can't just let it go-the dog will become matted, which can irritate the skin badly. Just realize it is a major commitment to have a dog in general, let alone a long-haired one. I have seen way too many uncomfortable, unhappy matted dogs that have to be shaved down and put through hours of grooming to clean them up...Please research whatever breed you decide and be prepared...
