My best friends are total Bleach fanatics. Help me understand what they are talking about. Please?

I gave the show a chance and no offence I hated it. My friends love it, but I don't understand what they like about it. All they talk about is Bleach so I end up not understanding any conversation that they have. I was so desperate one day that I actually watched it and took notes to surprise my friends the next day. What is a Soul Reaper, and why does that orange hair kid have such a big sword.

Please Help Me Understand what they see in it. Don't hold back on the details. Maybe one day I might watch it again.

Soul Reapers are based off of what the Japanese think about the Grim Reaper. You can think of them as Grim Reapers (and maybe kinda like angels too, I've heard people say). They pass from a place called the 'Soul Society' which is similar to what we think of as 'Heaven' and move into our world. In our world, they go unseen until you are dying or have died. When you are dead, the Soul Reapers come to you and perform a 'Soul Burial' in which they send you to Soul Soceity (help your spirit pass on to Heaven) This is more of a secondary job in Bleach. Soul Reapers also fight 'Hollows' which are souls who are evil or become evil against their will(Hollows can be thought of as demons, and the Soul Reapers fight them, like archangels) Hollows come in at the beginning and remain a central enemy in Bleach

The main character is named Ichigo Kurosaki, and he is a regular guy (note I did not say 'normal') who has been able to see ghosts al his life. He accidently gains the powers of a Soul Reaper, and his sword is so big because he has so much Spiritual Power (Spiritual Power is the strength a Soul Reaper has. The more spirit power you have, the stronger a Soul Reaper you are. At first, Ichigo has tons of Spirit Power and does not know how to control it, so his sword is huge. Later on when he lears a little about controlling it, it becomes much smaller. Longer but smaller and easier to handle)

Some terms you might hear:

Shimigami: Japanese for 'Death God' and in English it means 'Soul Reaper' (censors somehow thought 'Death God' would anger religious people I guess?)

Zanpakuto- The name of a Soul Reapers sword. Each sword is unique. Each sword has a name and a personality within it. Using a Zanpakuto, a Soul Reaper fights, and can transform into more powerful forms besides being a regular Soul Reaper

Soul Society- Another name for Heaven (close enough anyway)

Hueco Mundo (Spanish for 'Hollow World') is where the evil Hollows come from

The best thing to do would just be to ask them! Give it a chance! I did the same thing with a show called "inuyasha" My friend wouldn't shut up about it, so i gave it no chance. I recently watched it, and liked it! Now I can join in with my friends conversation! A soul reaper kills hollows, or "bad spirits" and sends the good spirits to "soul society" or like heaven. The big sword is his sword to kill the hollows.

Haha! I have a friend like you so I'm used to explaining the plot. Soul reaper-basically a japanese version of the grim reaper, they send dead spirits to either heaven [soul society] or hell. Sometimes the spirits are are soul-devouring evil ghosts [called hollows]. They are the principal antagonists during the first part of the manga and remain a primary threat in most of the series.

The orange haired kid [Ichigo] has a big sword because the story starts out with him being able to see ghost [kinda like the sixth sense] because of this he has an insane amout of spirit energy. A hollow sensed his energy eager to devor him. But he couldnt find him so it attacked his family. So when the soul reaper came alonging to save the day, Ichigo got in the soul reapers way which caused the reaper to be injured and unable to fight. So the soul reaper sends her powers to Ichigo which enables him to fight the hollow and save his family. But later on he realizes the consiqunce of taking a soul reapers power. Maybe if you watched it from the first episode you would like it thats how my anti-anime friends started liking it.

OMGOSH!! U DoNT LIKE BLEACH!! U SHOuLD WATCH MORE EpS!! it GETS BETTER!! ok so like theres this guy who can c ghosts and one day this good ghost appears and yea ok and suddenly this hollow appears. A hollow is a person....who died but...when they died..some kind of hollows attacks that person and that person becomes a hollow.....ok...the hollow ate the ghost...(i think) and then his family was in danger...so theres like another soul repear he can c it (of course) and then the only way to save his family is by giving the power to the orange haired guy. And the reason y he had the big huge sword is cuz he has A LOT of soul thingy like sprit and like yea. And he has orange hair cuz like he was born that way....his mom had brownish...orangeish hair. So like yea...and he basically killed his mom...like the hollow did....a different one...like his mom died when he was 9. I hope this information has helped u and has made u want to watch bleach again...i hope one day u will keep watching bleach!
